China shores up N Korea ties with foreign minister visit

China has moved to shore up its relations with North Korea, as Pyongyang flirts with Washington and Seoul in talks on nuclear disarmament and a formal end to the Korean war.

Wang Yi, China’s foreign minister, arrived in Pyongyang on Wednesday for a two-day trip, paving the way for a possible visit to North Korea by Chinese president Xi Jinping later this year.

Sun Yun, an expert on China’s foreign policy at the Stimson Center in Washington, said Mr Xi’s visit to Pyongyang could happen as early as June, after the summit between North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong Un and US president Donald Trump.
