Donald Trump’s pledge to put “America First” has reached the doors of the country’s car industry.
The US president is considering a 25 per cent tariff on vehicles imported into the country, with a specific aim of harming the German manufacturers he sees as eating into the market of domestic premium brands such as General Motors’ Cadillac or Ford’s Lincoln.
The move, part of a moving feast of threats as the US seeks to redress what it sees as an international trade imbalance, has raised questions among carmakers over whether they need to produce more vehicles in the US to avoid being stung by the tariffs.
