Trump’s doctrine means the world is unlikely to avoid a trade war

The world has been spending the past two years trying to determine the contours of Donald Trump’s trade doctrine and seeking to establish how much protectionist bite will come with the tweeted bark.

In recent weeks we have been learning that Mr Trump isn’t afraid to bite as the US president has fired the first shots in his trade wars. On Sunday we also received (via tweet) what feels like an important statement of the Trump Doctrine when it comes to trade.  

The message was simple: Remove those trade barriers of yours that I don’t like (Hello EU auto tariffs! Hi there Canadian dairy farmers!) or my government will hit you with tariffs far larger than those you tax us with now.
