Daimler and Bosch plan to start their first test of a driverless shuttle service with the launch of a pilot programme in Silicon Valley in the second half of next year.
The German carmaker and the parts supplier, which have been working together on driverless technology since April last year, said customers would be able to summon vehicles from an autonomous fleet operating on “select routes” in a town in the northern California region.
The trial will mark a high-profile entry into the backyard of some of the most ambitious driverless technology companies. They include Waymo, which has already become the first company to begin consumer trials of a completely autonomous ride-hailing service on public roads, with no back-up drivers.
