Benjamin Netanyahu’s fragile governing coalition has agreed to dissolve the Israeli parliament and called early elections that will be seen as a referendum on the veteran prime minister.
In a statement on Monday party leaders said that “out of budgetary and national responsibility the heads of the coalition parties decided, in unanimous agreement, to dissolve the Knesset and go to new elections”. The Knesset speaker said the vote would likely to take place on April 9.
The election has been called as Israel’s attorney-general, Avichai Mandelblit, considers police recommendations to indict Mr Netanyahu on three corruption cases.
