Donald Trump has threatened to close the US border with Mexico if Democrats do not accede to his demands for border wall money, as the stalemate over funding pushes the partial government shutdown into its second week.
The US president issued his threat on social media after Congress failed this week to find a way out of the impasse, which has led to about a quarter of the federal government being closed. About 800,000 federal staff are either working without pay or at home on unpaid leave.
Mr Trump initially told the top Democratic lawmakers he would be “proud” to shut the government down for border security, but Republicans have recently tried to shift blame on to the Democrats as positions become more entrenched.
