Moon Jae-in relaunches US-North Korea charm offensive

South Korean president Moon Jae-in is relaunching his efforts to build bridges between the US and North Korea and has warned against any prolonged delay to restarting negotiations in the wake of the failed summit in Hanoi last week.

Chairing a national security council meeting of high-ranking ministers on Monday for the first time in about nine months, Mr Moon said: “I believe the North Korea-US negotiations will reach an agreement in the end, but I ask you to work for an early resumption of working-level dialogue between the two because we do not want the stalemate to be prolonged.”

The meeting came four days after the second summit between Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ended in failure due to differences over lifting sanctions in return for destroying the Yongbyon nuclear facilities.
