The US has warned Germany it will scale back intelligence-sharing with German spy agencies if Berlin allows Huawei to take part in the buildout of its superfast fifth generation mobile network.
The warning marks a significant escalation in the Trump administration’s efforts to convince allies to exclude Huawei, which it says could be used by the Chinese state to conduct espionage or cyber sabotage.
This is the first time it has actively threatened to suspend intelligence sharing if an ally goes against its wishes and allows Huawei to supply telecommunications equipment for future 5G networks.
