US officials to visit China next week for trade talks

Donald Trump’s leading trade negotiators will travel to Beijing next week in a bid to resolve the remaining sticking points in talks to end the trade war with China, according to two senior US administration officials.

Robert Lighthizer, the US trade representative, and Steven Mnuchin, the Treasury secretary, are expected to meet with Liu He, the Chinese vice-premier, to pave the way for a final deal to be sealed by the end of next month, if a breakthrough is reached.

Mr Lighthizer and Mr Mnuchin had spoken with Mr Liu in video conferences this month but failed to overcome the final hurdles in the talks, which may require face-to-face negotiations.
