Tens of thousands of people marched to Hong Kong’s parliament on Sunday, demanding the government abandon its proposed extradition law that allows people from the former British colony to be sent to mainland China to stand trial.
Sunday’s rally drew the largest crowd of protesters to the city’s streets since the Umbrella Movement in 2014, a three-month occupation of roads in the heart of Hong Kong by tens of thousands of citizens.
The proposed law, introduced by the Hong Kong government in February, has spooked an unusually diverse cross-section of Hong Kong, including business leaders, lawyers, professional groups, journalists and human rights organisations, which fear it may be used as a weapon against anyone passing through the international transport hub.
