Huawei executive to seek to halt US extradition process

Meng Wanzhou’s legal team plans ask a Canadian court to stay extradition proceedings to the US because of the “unlawful detention, search and arrest” of the chief financial officer of Chinese telecoms group Huawei last December in Vancouver.

Her lawyer Scott Fenton told the court on Wednesday that law enforcement and border agents, along with Canadian justice officials, co-ordinated with US FBI agents and “engaged in a pattern of serious Charter [of Rights and Freedoms] violations.”

Ms Meng’s arrest has sparked a crisis between the US, Canada and China. The US had requested her arrest and is seeking her extradition to face charges of breaching US sanctions against Iran. In addition to her job as a Huawei executive, Ms Meng, 47, is also the daughter of the company’s founder, Ren Zhengfei.
