Hong Kong’s Carrie Lam apologises again but refuses to step down

Hong Kong’s leader Carrie Lam has apologised a second time for her handling of a contentious extradition bill and held out the prospect of allowing the proposed law to lapse as she struggles to defuse a political crisis gripping the city.

The government is facing the worst political impasse to hit the territory since it reverted from British to Chinese sovereignty in 1997, after about 2m people took to the streets on Sunday, according to estimates from the protest organisers.

The demonstrators have threatened to hold further protests unless Ms Lam resigns and the government scraps rather than just suspends the bill.
