Populist mayor seals victory in Taiwan presidential primaries

Han Kuo-yu, the populist mayor of Taiwan’s second largest city Kaohsiung, won the opposition Kuomintang’s (KMT) presidential primaries, pitting the China-friendly politician against incumbent Tsai Ing-wen in next January’s elections.

Mr Han defeated Terry Gou, Taiwan’s richest man and founder of electronics group Foxconn, by 17 percentage points, the KMT said on Monday.

Mr Han’s decisive victory in a fiercely-fought, five-way race highlights the surprise emergence of the 62-year-old as a political star driven by a massive campaign by Chinese-backed media. However, it also creates the risk of a split in the KMT which would benefit Ms Tsai, as Mr Gou is considering an independent candidacy.
