Sects, lies and British politics

For decades, the consensus was that economics explained British politics. Most Britons voted according to their own pocketbooks, and the party that looked most economically competent would get elected.

Using that rule of thumb, David Cameron made the Remain campaign of 2016 all about the supposed economic damage from leaving the EU. When Leave won, commentators interpreted the vote as a cry of economic pain.

In fact, economics didn’t explain the referendum (income didn’t predict people’s votes) nor much else that has followed. Rather, the new rule of British politics is, “It’s anthropology, stupid.”
