Two leading US senators have asked intelligence officials to open an investigation into TikTok, the popular video-sharing platform owned by the Chinese technology company ByteDance.
Charles Schumer, the most senior Democrat in the Senate, and Tom Cotton, the Republican senator from Arkansas, have asked the acting director of national intelligence for an assessment of the security risks posed by the Chinese company.
The senators sent a letter to Joseph Maguire on Wednesday, in which they said: “With over 110m downloads in the US alone, TikTok is a potential counter-intelligence threat we cannot ignore.”
