China's heavy industry shutdown cut 100m tonnes of carbon emissions

Drastically reduced output from Chinese heavy industry as a result of the coronavirus outbreak has cut the country’s carbon emissions by about 100m tonnes in the last two weeks, new research says.

Chinese coal-fired power stations, oil refineries and steel blast furnaces operating at their lowest levels in years has slashed a quarter, or 100m tonnes, from carbon dioxide emissions, according to an estimate from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air.

That’s equivalent to about a quarter of the UK’s annual emissions output.
