UK prime minister Boris Johnson’s government will study the experience of Italy and China as they emerge from the coronavirus lockdown, with ministers planning for the moment when national life and economic activity in Britain can start returning to normal.
A total of 5,373 people in the UK had died in hospital from coronavirus by 5pm on Sunday, and officials are reluctant to talk publicly about an “exit strategy” from the lockdown before the virus has even peaked. Dominic Raab, the foreign secretary, on Monday repeatedly declined to outline the government's exit strategy.
“The government's overriding priority is to get past the peak,” he said, insisting that the focus first had to be on bringing down the number of new Covid-19 infections.
