The US no longer views Hong Kong as autonomous from China, secretary of state Mike Pompeo said, marking a possible step towards removing the special trade status that helped the territory maintain its position as a major financial hub.
“No reasonable person can assert today that Hong Kong maintains a high degree of autonomy from China, given facts on the ground,” Mr Pompeo said.
His statement was the most serious Trump administration response so far to the decision by China to impose new security laws on Hong Kong, in a move that has raised concern about the territory’s future as a financial centre.
