Boris Johnson has committed the UK government to an independent inquiry into the handling of the coronavirus pandemic, in a move that will bring intense scrutiny of the decisions made by ministers and officials before and during the crisis.
The pledge goes further than previous ministerial comments and by promising an “independent” inquiry, Mr Johnson cannot limit the scope of the investigation to an internal, private review.
Speaking in the House of Commons on Wednesday, the prime minister said it would not be right to hold an inquiry immediately. “I do not believe that now in the middle of combating, as we still are, a pandemic, is the right moment to devote huge amounts of official time to an inquiry,” he said.
