Vaccinations slash risk of serious illness in Scotland, study finds

Chance of hospitalisation falls by 84% in study that will be closely watched around the world

The UK’s Covid-19 vaccination campaign has led to a “very substantial” drop in serious illness from the disease, according to data released on Monday.

The risk of hospitalisation fell by about 84 per cent 28 days after vaccination, according to research conducted by the University of Edinburgh, the University of Strathclyde and Public Health Scotland.

The study, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, looked at the health records of 5.4m people in Scotland, equivalent to 99 per cent of the population in the country.
