Wall Street stocks head for third day of back-to-back falls

Slide comes ahead of Fed minutes that may signal direction of crisis-era support

Stocks on both sides of the Atlantic sank on Wednesday, as investors awaited Federal Reserve minutes that will provide clues to the direction of crisis-era support that has helped shore up financial markets.

Wall Street’s S&P 500 was heading for its third consecutive day of falls after opening 1.3 per cent lower, while the tech-focused Nasdaq Composite lost 1.4 per cent.

The drops follow a weak session in Europe, where the region-wide Stoxx 600 was down 1.9 per cent in the mid-afternoon trading in London, close to the benchmark’s biggest daily slides this year.
