Fumio Kishida has been confirmed as the 100th prime minister of Japan and has formed a government focused on addressing economic and security threats from China.
In his most striking appointment that also delivers on his promise to bring in a younger generation of political leaders, Kishida chose Takayuki Kobayashi, a former vice-minister of defence, for the newly created post of minister for economic security.
The Harvard-educated Kobayashi is expected to work closely with Akira Amari, the new Liberal Democratic party secretary-general, on strategies to respond to China-related risks in the areas of semiconductor supply chains, cyber security and intellectual property.
