Russia said it had begun a new phase of its invasion of Ukraine on Tuesday as officials in the eastern border region of Donbas urged civilians to flee a renewed offensive.
“Another stage of this operation is beginning and I am sure this will be a very important moment of this entire special operation,” Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, told the India Today TV channel on Tuesday.
Lavrov’s comments were the first Russian confirmation that it had begun a new offensive to capture the Donbas after partially regrouping its forces and appointing a new field commander for the invasion.
