Opposition candidate Lee Jae-myung has won a clear victory in South Korea’s presidential election, raising hopes of an end to months of political turmoil in Asia’s fourth-largest economy.
With more than 99 per cent of votes counted, Lee, candidate of the leftwing Democratic party, had taken 49.3 per cent, well ahead of the 41.3 per cent secured by conservative rival Kim Moon-soo, who conceded defeat early on Wednesday morning.
In a speech outside the country’s national assembly, Lee pledged to protect South Korea’s democracy after the failed attempt to impose martial law by his ousted conservative predecessor Yoon Suk Yeol.
