Japan has deployed its first long-range cruise missiles at a military camp in south-western Kumamoto prefecture, in a landmark expansion of the limits of its pacifist constitution.
The first deployment of the Type-12 missiles, which have a range of 1,000km and could reach targets in mainland China, gives Japan its own “stand-off” capability, or the power to strike an enemy far beyond its own territory.
As well as the deployment of the Type-12 missiles at Camp Kengun in Kumamoto, which are configured for land-to-ship use, Japan also positioned a new type of hypervelocity gliding projectile at a Ground Self Defence Force camp in central prefecture of Shizuoka on Tuesday.
