South Africa-US dispute escalates as Vladimir Putin calls Cyril Ramaphosa

Washington’s claim that Pretoria covertly sent arms to Russia sparks serious diplomatic incident

Russian president Vladimir Putin has spoken to his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa amid a diplomatic storm over a US claim that Pretoria covertly sent arms to Moscow.

Ramaphosa’s African National Congress accused the US of a “reckless” breach of diplomatic protocol over the claim, made by the US ambassador Reuben Brigety on Thursday.
