Boris Johnson’s Daily Mail column broke rules, vetting body warns

Acoba says former UK PM’s ‘clear breach’ illustrates need for overhaul of system governing former officials’ jobs

Boris Johnson’s acceptance of a column in the Daily Mail was a “clear and unambiguous breach” of the rules on former UK ministers’ jobs that shows the system must be overhauled, the body that vets external appointments of ex-officials has warned.

The ministerial code requires former ministers to seek advice on accepting new roles for two years after leaving government, but Johnson submitted his application 30 minutes before his newspaper column was announced earlier this month.

Lord Eric Pickles, chair of the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments, warned on Tuesday of the risk of “further scandal” if his committee, often labelled toothless, did not gain new powers to impose sanctions for non-compliance.
