The number of people waiting for routine hospital treatment in England has hit new record levels, according to official data that will strike a blow at UK prime minister Rishi Sunak’s pledge to cut care backlogs by the next general election.
Waiting lists for procedures such as hip and knee replacements rose to 7.6mn in June, according to figures published by NHS England on Thursday, an increase of about 100,000 compared with May.
At the end of June, 314 people had been waiting more than two years and 7,177 over 18 months, while 383,083 patients had been queueing for more than a year and 97,275 for over 65 weeks.
