US defence secretary Lloyd Austin was hospitalised last week after complications following surgery to treat prostate cancer, his medical team said on Tuesday, the first significant details to emerge about his unexplained absence earlier this month.
Austin, 70, remains in hospital but was expected to make a full recovery, according to a statement from John Maddox and Gregory Chestnut, doctors from the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The specialists said Austin’s prognosis was “excellent” and that his team caught the cancer early.
He has faced mounting criticism for failing to inform the White House for three days that he had been hospitalised last week. Austin has since taken responsibility for the lack of transparency.
