A UN expert said on Tuesday there were “reasonable grounds” to believe Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza in its war against Hamas in the enclave.
At a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council, Francesca Albanese, the UN’s special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied territories, said she believed the “threshold indicating the commission of the crime of genocide . . . has been met” and called for an arms embargo on Israel.
The Israeli embassy to the UN in Geneva rejected the accusations as “an obscene inversion of reality” and insisted Israel was complying with international law.
