Donald Trump’s fate is now in the hands of 12 New Yorkers who began deliberations on Wednesday morning in the Manhattan “hush money” trial after five weeks of testimony.
The jury of seven men and five women was given the case following instructions from Justice Juan Merchan, who urged them to “consult with each other” and to “not surrender an honest view of the evidence simply because [they] want the trial to end”.
Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, remained uncharacteristically silent on his way into court, declining to speak to the press. He occasionally shook his head as the charges against him were defined by the judge, and appeared at other times to be asleep.
