Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed for the first time that Ukrainian forces are fighting in Russia’s Belgorod region, saying that the cross-border operation is intended to protect Ukraine’s towns in its north-east.
The Ukrainian president said late on Monday that Ukrainian troops were present inside two Russian border regions — Belgorod and Kursk — even as Moscow’s forces have been pushing them out of the latter region in recent weeks.
Zelenskyy, who has previously argued that Russia must feel the consequences of its own war, described the cross-border operations as “absolutely justified”.
