US and Iran agree to follow-up talks over nuclear crisis

Steve Witkoff and Abbas Araghchi met briefly after indirect negotiations in Oman

The US and Iran held their highest level talks in years on Saturday as the Trump administration pushes for a deal to curb Tehran’s nuclear programme and ease a crisis that risks triggering the Middle East’s next conflict.

Tehran said that after more than two hours of indirect negotiations between US envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi, the parties had agreed to follow up talks next week.

The Iranian foreign ministry described the talks as “constructive” and marked by “mutual respect”, adding that Witkoff and Araghchi briefly met as they were leaving the venue in Oman.
