On the eve of the first anniversary of the merger between the UK’s Allen & Overy and New York’s Shearman & Sterling, the law firm faced a challenge no one could have predicted: the ire of Donald Trump.
A&O Shearman, a global behemoth of nearly 4,000 lawyers, became the latest firm to settle with the Trump administration on April 11 over its use of diversity, equity and inclusion hiring policies. As part of a deal brokered alongside three other firms, A&O Shearman agreed to deliver $125mn worth of pro bono services and drop the term “DEI” from its programmes.
