Nationalist candidate Nawrocki wins Polish presidential election

Historian comes from behind to defeat centre-right rival Rafał Trzaskowski in win for Maga movement abroad

Karol Nawrocki, a historian standing for the nationalist opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, has narrowly won Poland’s presidential run-off vote in a blow to the country’s government that could weaken its role within the EU.

The result is also a rare win for Donald Trump’s Maga movement abroad, following election defeats for rightwing politicians aligned with the US president in Canada, Australia and Romania.

Nawrocki won 50.9 per cent of votes in Sunday’s presidential election against 49.1 per cent for Rafał Trzaskowski, the pro-EU mayor of Warsaw who represented the Civic Platform party of Prime Minister Donald Tusk, according to Poland’s electoral commission.
