Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro takes the stand over alleged coup plot

Erstwhile rightwing head of state denies planning putsch to remain in power after failing to win re-election

Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro denied having plotted a coup d’état as he took the stand for the first time over accusations of seeking to violently overturn a failed re-election bid in 2022.

The hard-right populist gave testimony to a supreme court trial in which he and associates are charged with planning an abortive putsch to remain in power following his defeat to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the current president.

A Christian nationalist and ally of US President Donald Trump, Bolsonaro could face decades behind bars if found guilty of the alleged offences.
