Sir Keir Starmer has put his cabinet on alert for a possible US attack on Iran, as ministers discussed working with American forces in the event that Tehran threatened UK assets in the Middle East.
Just 24 hours after insisting Donald Trump had given no indication he was about to “get involved” in the conflict between Israel and Iran, the prime minister and his cabinet reviewed how Britain might respond in the event of a major escalation.
UK officials said the situation was “grave and volatile”, while Starmer’s team discussed whether the president might seek to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities from a joint US-UK air base at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.
