ChatGPT — the last of the great romantics

Large language models have their limits — but when it comes to writing break-up letters, they are the perfect tool

A colleague witnessed someone break up with their partner using ChatGPT this week. They were sitting next to each other on the London Underground. She watched as the young man studied a long, impassioned entreaty from his about-to-be-ex-girlfriend, then copy and paste the message, add a few prompts and smash back a reply.

He didn’t let the chatbot do all the talking: he took a few lines and retooled them in his own words. Other bits he simply used verbatim. He didn’t think “their time together had been a waste of time”, for example. And he used the suggestion: “I’ve learnt so much from you.”
