Gita Gopinath, the IMF’s second-in-command, is set to step down, paving the way for the Trump administration to appoint a deputy to managing director Kristalina Georgieva.

The position is usually filled with a candidate nominated by the US administration, with European leaders tending to nominate appointees for the role of managing director.
