Academic freedom in America is in danger

Columbia University’s settlement with the Trump administration marks a significant erosion of institutional autonomy

Columbia University insists that the $221mn settlement it reached last week with the Trump administration has not compromised academic freedom. Long considered the foundation of American educational practice and success, “academic freedom” has now become the line in the sand for universities defending themselves against demands being made by the US government.

But what is academic freedom? And how does it relate to the issues that are at stake in these disputes?
