El Salvador allows Nayib Bukele to seek indefinite re-election

Legislative assembly’s vote to remove presidential term limits raises fears authoritarian leader will remain in power

El Salvador’s legislative assembly has voted to remove term limits for the presidency, opening the door for Nayib Bukele, who has accumulated power in the Central American country, to remain in office indefinitely.

The campaign pushed his popularity above 80 per cent, but critics said it also created a climate of fear of dissent.
