El Salvador’s legislative assembly has voted to remove term limits for the presidency, opening the door for Nayib Bukele, who has accumulated power in the Central American country, to remain in office indefinitely.
Bukele, an authoritarian and the self-styled “world’s coolest dictator”, won admirers across Latin America for his tough crime crackdown in 2022, which imprisoned more than 2 per cent of adults in the country and slashed the homicide rate.
The campaign pushed his popularity above 80 per cent, but critics said it also created a climate of fear of dissent.
