US to propose some visa applicants post bond of up to $15,000

Year-long pilot programme to target visitors from nations most likely to stay in US beyond authorisation

The US will propose some tourist and business visa applicants post a bond of up to $15,000 as part of an effort to clamp down on visitors who overstay their visas, the government said on Monday.

The Department of State said the year-long pilot programme would begin on August 20 and would target individuals from countries with high visa overstay rates.

The move marks a further expansion of the Trump administration’s anti-immigration policies, which were a cornerstone of the president’s campaign platform.
