Google, Kairos and Tennessee Valley Authority ink landmark nuclear power deal

TVA becomes first US utility to agree to buy electricity from advanced generation IV reactor

Energy provider Tennessee Valley Authority has signed a nuclear power agreement with Google and Kairos Power, making it the US’s first utility to secure a binding deal with a next-generation small modular reactor company.

Kairos, a small modular reactor company, is building a reactor in Tennessee that will supply 50 megawatts to federal utility TVA, which provides power to Google’s data centres in Alabama and Tennessee.

TVA, the US’s largest public power provider, is the only utility in the country to have inked a deal to buy electricity from an advanced generation IV reactor, a novel type of reactor that is not expected to be operational until 2030.
