Why Sicilians hate Meloni’s bridge

Locals are wary of organised crime hijacking works in earthquake prone area and are preparing for legal battles

Rosa Cattafi scrimped for years to buy a small house in a tranquil neighbourhood on the northeastern tip of Sicily, overlooking the picturesque Messina Strait. 

But the home she purchased 11 years ago is now one of hundreds properties slated for expropriation to make way for Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s planned €13.5bn bridge linking Sicily to the Italian mainland.

Cattafi is determined to “fight in every way” she can to save it. “I made a lot of sacrifices to buy this house,” said the 66-year old who works as an administrator at Messina city hall and paid €150,000 for the house.
