Justice department calls on Federal Reserve to sack governor Lisa Cook

Letter to central bank chair Jay Powell is latest escalation in Trump administration’s assault on the institution

The US Department of Justice has called for Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook to be removed from her post in the latest escalation of the Trump administration’s assault on the central bank.

A senior department official wrote to Fed chair Jay Powell on Thursday, saying allegations made by the federal housing agency this week against Cook required “further examination” and suggesting he immediately dismiss her from the central bank’s board.

“At this time, I encourage you to remove Ms Cook from your board,” wrote Ed Martin, a justice department official appointed by President Donald Trump in the letter, seen by the Financial Times.
