Wrexham AFC, the Welsh football club owned by two Hollywood actors, expects commercial revenue this season to rival some mid-sized Premier League teams, a sign of how its international fan base is helping it outperform off the pitch.
Wrexham’s chief executive Michael Williamson said commercial income would grow “significantly” this season as the club pushes for its fourth back-to-back promotion since it was bought in 2021 by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney — which would mean a place in England’s Premier League.
New global distribution deals mean that Wrexham shirts will now be sold in US retail chains Dick’s Sporting Goods and Pelé Soccer. Licensing agreements, such as with cap maker New Era, are set to boost sales of other merchandise for the club, which found fame in the wake of a Disney documentary following the actors’ efforts to revive its fortunes. Wrexham is forecasting growth in its retail income this year of at least 60 per cent.
