UK chancellor Rachel Reeves has asked officials to draw up a list of options for tax reform heading into the autumn Budget, with property levies one of the key areas of focus.
With the Treasury facing a potential fiscal hole of more than £20bn, the chancellor wanted to both iron out inefficiencies in the tax system and raise near-term revenue, people familiar with the discussions said.
The chancellor is a long way from making any decisions in the area, however, and by considering changes to property taxation she is wading into one of the most contested areas of UK politics.
