Israel said on Monday that it was prepared to carry out a “phased reduction” of the troops it has deployed in southern Lebanon for the past year if the country’s armed forces disarmed Hizbollah.
The announcement came after the Lebanese cabinet earlier this month approved a framework put forward by US special envoy Tom Barrack designed to disarm Hizbollah, the Shia militant group which has long been the most powerful non-state actor in Lebanon.
In a statement on Monday, the office of Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged the Lebanese government’s move, which it described as a “momentous decision”.
