Rachel Reeves has set the autumn Budget date for November 26, meaning that the chancellor faces almost three months of speculation about how she intends to fill a gaping hole in the UK public finances.
The Conservatives claimed the long lead-in to the Budget will create uncertainty for business and freeze investment, as Reeves weighs options for more tax rises as well as measures intended to boost growth.
Last year’s Budget took place on October 30, almost a month earlier than this year’s exercise. Reeves wants to give the government’s independent fiscal watchdog time to consider pro-growth reforms the Treasury is planning.
