Nepal’s prime minister has resigned as widespread anti-government protests escalated on Tuesday, a day after the country’s worst violence in decades left 19 people dead following clashes with police.
Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli said he was stepping down, “taking into account the extraordinary situation currently prevailing in the country”, according to a resignation letter seen by the Financial Times.
Oli, a four-time prime minister who took office last year, had resigned “to ease the current situation”, said Prakash Silwal, his press secretary.
